Abstract
ABSTRACT A sedimentologic and geomorphologic study of Pleistocene and Holocene sediments on a high wave energy barrier coast in New South Wales, Australia, shows that if sediments are polygenetic in origin, skewness is the only parameter that can distinguish beach, barrier and dune sands. It is proposed that similar results may be obtained from other barrier coasts comprised of sediments that have been reworked during Pleistocene times. Sediments derived from adjacent bedrock areas and deposited within embayments are not so well sorted, but skewness still distinguishes between the various sedimentary environments.
