Abstract
Study of signed numbers as such was previously deferred until late junior high school years; and then unrealistic, artificial situations and rules that confused rather than clarified the situation were frequently used. One certainly does not need to introduce signed numbers at primary grades just for the sake of having included them, but there are situations that promote investigation of them at that level to satisfy a particular need. The student interest and willingness to explore presents a real opportunity to establish a feeling of confidence and understanding when dealing with this topic.
