Abstract

In this paper an approach towards scalable group (many-to-many) communication across ATM networks is presented. Many network based applications rely on the concept of groups with dynamic membership. Todays ATM networks do not provide an adequate support for group communication as for example is available with IP multicast. In this document a hierarchical solution is described that adapts to the PNNI routing protocol. Based on a hierarchical group management, a scalable and efficient scheme for data transportation over ATM connections is presented. This scheme is based on a distributed signalling protocol, that allows group communication beyond local ATM network boundaries.
