Abstract

An optimal signal constellation design (OSCD) algorithm, suitable for WDM systems dominated by cross-phase modulation (XPM), named here XPM-OSCD, will be described in this invited paper, in which the cumulative log-likelihood-function is used as the optimization criterion. Additionally, the collaborative demodulation scheme will be described, compensating for the nonlinear phase noise due to XPM. We will demonstrate by Monte Carlo simulation that 16-ary constellation obtained by XPM-OSCD algorithm significantly outperforms 16-ary QAM, when non-collaborative demodulation scheme is used. On the other hand, when the collaborative demodulation scheme is used in combination with XPM-OSCD algorithm, we will demonstrate that the transmission distance of conventional QAM can be dramatically extended.
