Abstract

Whereas in the past the development of CAD systems was directed to provide the necessary functionality, today the aspects of a friendly, problem oriented user interface get more important. There are two main goals that must be achieved obtaining the necessary acceptance by the users of the CAD system. First a common and unified user interface throughout the system and second, the capability of graphically representing objects, interrelations and functions must be provided. This paper describes the design of SIEMCAD, a User Interface Management System designed especially in the area of electrical and mechanical CAD. SIEMCAD as dialog manager offers a functional interface to the application. The dialog or application designer finds an interface well structured and easy to use to generating a user interface and to control the dialog with the user.
