Abstract

Abstract The Side Effects of Drugs Annual is a yearly review of published literature regarding unexpected effects of drugs. This chapter reviews publications that describe reactions to Local Anesthetics published from January 2020 to December 2020 and covers the following drugs: benzocaine, bupivacaine, chloroprocaine, cocaine, dibucaine, lidocaine/lignocaine, mepivacaine, prilocaine, ropivacaine, and tetracaine. Adverse events such as local anesthetic systemic toxicity (LAST) and allergy have been associated with their usage. The following case reports predominantly demonstrate common themes of hypersensitivity reactions, LAST, and methemoglobinemia. Additionally, there have been isolated reports of unique reactions to LAs, such as acute euphoria and withdrawal syndrome. In the special studies section, positive side-effects offering unexpected benefits have been identified, particularly tumor cell reduction with local anesthetic usage. This chapter looks to provide evidence of the paradox that local anesthetic usage not only comes with the possibility of negative side-effects, but also positive side-effects with unexpected benefits.
