Abstract
The first Hispanic translation of Columela’s De re rustica by Fernando Oliveira - unfinished and preserved (as unique copy) in the National Library of Paris - exemplifies the displacement of the axis of humanistic work on Columela from Italy to other European regions during the sixteenth century. The Oliveira’s translation finds its specific context in a precise section of the Portuguese humanism, devoted to scientific research and shaped by the impact of the New World, with its audacious interpretation of the experience/authority duality.
