Sickle-cell anemia in humans was first reported by Herrick (1). It was described as a hereditary and familial disease present and recognizable in very early infancy, and peculiar to the negro race. It was thought that there is some congenital defect of the red corpuscles which renders them more susceptible to hemolytic toxins and to phagocytosis.
