Abstract

To the Editor: —The April issue of the A. M. A.Archives of Internal Medicinecontains a paper by Rosenblum et al. on the lack of relationship between the sickle cell trait and tuberculosis in Negroes. Reference is made to our previous publication (Weiss, W., and Stecher, W.: Tuberculosis and the Sickle Cell Trait, A. M. A.Arch. Int. Med.89:914-922 [June] 1952) with the implication that the results of our investigation have not been confirmed. Therefore I would like to take this opportunity to point out several considerable and significant differences between our work and the investigation of Rosenblum et al. We reported that the sickle cell trait is more than twice as common (12.6%) among tuberculous Negroes admitted to a large municipal general hospital as it is among nontuberculous Negroes admitted to the same hospital (5.3%).
