Abstract

During the past two years, public attention has been focused on sickle cell anemia as never before. Education programs have been launched, screening efforts started, and research programs expanded with the support of private and public funds. In order to summarize the current status of knowledge of sickle cell disease, 36 recognized authorities were assembled in November 1971. The program was sponsored jointly by the National Foundation-March of Dimes and the Foundation for Research and Education in Sickle Cell Disease.<i>Sickle Cell Disease: Diagnosis, Management, Education and Research</i>is the edited proceedings of that symposium. Unquestionably, it is the most comprehensive analysis of sickle cell disease yet published. The major portion of the book covers specific scientific developments: the genetic basis for the disease; epidemiology; the spectrum of clinical features; gross, microscopical, and molecular pathology; and management.
