Abstract

This paper considers the role of sibling relationships in families of divorce. The nature and functions of sibling relationships are first discussed in light of current research and family theory. This theoretical background is used to support the notion that sibling relationships are not only affected by divorce, but can also be an important resource in helping children through post-divorce adjustment. Several case studies are presented which provide support for this perspective. Finally, suggestions are made for the clinician interested in applying knowledge about siblings in the family therapy setting.
