Abstract

Abstract It is no exaggeration to assert that Frank Sibley’s celebrated paper of 1959, “Aesthetic Concepts,” defined my early work in the philosophy of art between 1966, the year I received my doctorate, and 1973, the year I published my first book, Speaking of Art, which was an extended critique of Sibley’s position. After my Sibley years, my interests turned to what I thought was a neglected topic in the philosophy of art: namely, musical aesthetics.
