Abstract

The impact of controlled exothermic reactions on the sphere of materials processing is discussed. Although self‐propagating high‐temperature synthesis (SHS) has applications in sintering, densification, metallurgy, welding, coatings, and powder synthesis it is estimated that only 3–5% of its possible uses have been realized. Present applications are reviewed.
