Abstract

Explored was the influence of mechanical activation (MA), vacuum heat treatment (VHT), and ambient pressure on combustion of Ni–Al mixtures. Burning velocity was found to grow with increasing MA time. An increase in ambient pressure hampered the elongation of burned samples. No elongation was found for non-activated and heat-treated samples. VHT strongly accelerated combustion and prevented the formation of cracks on the surface of burned samples. The results were rationalized in terms of convection–conduction combustion theory.
