Abstract

Scientific research is most valuable when it can be shared and digested by any kind of audience. The skills required to disseminate information and have that information received and trusted are often not taught to scientists. CUNYSciCom, a student organization founded by two biology doctoral students in 2021, aims to provide resources to help improve science communication skills in graduate students at the City University of New York (CUNY). June 2022 saw CUNYSciCom's second annual "Communicating Your Science" Symposium, which featured back-to-back oral presentations for "general" and "scientific-peer" audiences from six graduate students, showcasing the different tools used to communicate to different audiences. CUNYSciCom will expand to host additional science outreach events, providing opportunities for CUNY STEM graduate students to engage with the public, sharing their research and building a relationship of trust in science.
