Abstract
The article documents a merger of two departments, Government Publications and Reference, which occurred in 1984. The Iowa State University Library measured the use of government publications before and after the merger by means of the circulation statistics and patron surveys. The patrons perceived the quality of reference service for government publications declining from “very good” to “good.” The data collected indicate a strong decline in the quantity of documents usage and a slight decline in the quality of reference service for government publications. This seems to show that the patrons of a library such as the Iowa State University Library will make more use of government publications that are serviced at a separate reference desk than they do when they are serviced at a general reference desk.
