• The staging of OSF is based on the posteroanterior occurrence of fibrotic bands. • The pattern of areca nut use whether spit or swallowed dictated the sites involved. • The differences in OSF presentation may be attributed to salivary pooling. • The history and practice of betel quid placement and use have to be documented.
