Abstract

EVIDENCE-BASED ANSWER Yes. Targeted HCV screening identifies 1 new case of chronic HCV for every 2 to 18 patients screened (SOR: C, systematic review of studies with disease-oriented outcomes) and carries a low risk of significant harm (SOR: B, systematic review of cross-sectional and case-control studies). Targeted screening also increases the number of patients progressing through treatment pathways (SOR: B, meta-analysis of small trials). Targeted HCV screening of high-risk patients is recommended by the US Preventive Services Task Force in addition to 1-time screening for persons born between 1945 and 1965 (SOR: B, evidence-based guideline).
