Abstract
To the Editor.— The Professional Advisory Board of the Epilepsy Foundation of America 1 responded to an inquiry 2 about scuba diving for persons with epilepsy in a recent issue. The Advisory Board of the Epilepsy Foundation of America was of the opinion that the decision as to whether a patient may scuba dive should be made by the individual with epilepsy and not by the examining physician. They also noted that, although there is an increased risk of accident or death in scuba divers, this should be an individual decision. Although one would certainly agree with their concept that the decision whether or not to participate in sports or other activities in life that are hazardous ideally should be an individual one, the examining physician is left with the dilemma as to whether, verbally or in writing, to permit or restrict diving.
