Abstract

Shot Peening to induce compressive stress is viewed by many as an additional treatment, therefore an additional cost. Whilst true that it is a cost that must be accounted for, that extra sum may produce considerable savings in other areas. A reduction in problems from fatigue, fretting, stress corrosion and other surface failure mechanisms can result in less customer complaint, greater customer confidence and overall better customer relations. In addition, present design can be extended in performance without expensive redesign; stocks can be reduced without double/treble stockholding and times between overhauls can be extended. Examples covering Aerospace, Automotive and Chemical Industries will be dealt with. Details will be given on various materials and the improvements available on the above failure mechanisms and how best to use the technique of Shot Peening for the best results. The controls necessary to achieve optimum performance will be mentioned briefly with the cost effects of varying parameters and their influence on that performance .
