Abstract

At present HSS, cemented carbides, ceramics, monocrystal and polycrystal diamonds and other kinds of tool materials are used. Time by time a number of tool materials is significantly enlarged in machinebuilding industry. Therefore the proper selection of tool materials which fulfill high efficiency of machining and required surface finish is very important. In the given article shorttime test method for selection of proper cutting tool materials is described. The quality of the given tool materials is appreciated by the topography of contact surfaces after shorttime cutting, taking into consideration the area of the developed spots and damages at the rake and flank surfaces. This method can be used not only for selection of tool materials but also in the process of creation a new cutting tool material.
