Abstract

The high real-space resolution of neutron diffraction experiments which is provided by use of spallation sources was exploited in order to differentiate the unlike PO bonds formed in the PO 4 units of ultraphosphate glass networks. The two PO peaks observed are assigned to oxygen sites on bridging and terminal positions. The mean PO distance is almost invariable versus composition. An elongation of both separate bonds with increasing metal oxide content compensates for the enhanced fraction of the shorter bonds, i.e. those of the terminal oxygen atoms. The CaO coordination numbers of about 6 do not depend on composition.
