Abstract

A new type of voltage regulator whose principle of operation is similar to that of a conventional saturable reactor is presented. It is shown that the stored magnetic field energy can be used to produce the required DC excitation with controllable level without using an auxiliary DC power source. Semiconductor switches in conjunction with standard three-limb magnetic circuits are used. A wide range of output voltage control is achieved and both lagging and leading power-factor operation is possible.
