Abstract

Short-term residential and day care is an important element of the pattern of community services for the intellectually handicapped. In the Northern Metropolitan Health Region of New South Wales three short-term residential units have opened since 1976. These units cater for clients of all ages with a range of intellectual handicap. The units provide emergency and holiday relief. plus a variety of assessment and follow up services. The most intensive use of the units is made by young, severe intellectually and physically handicapped clients, whose families experience great stress caring for them. Together with back-up community services, these units have reduced the demand for long-term care for the intellectually handicapped and contributed to their more positive existence within the community.
