Abstract

Ten volunteers were exposed to 0.75 ppM O/sub 3/ for 2 hr in large chamber. Sedentary or active (double minute ventilation) protocol was followed. Subjective data included the following: 8 coughed, 6 had substernal soreness, 3 had mild dyspnea. Pulmonary functional changes (avg of all) included: reduction of maximum static elastic lung recoil pressure, increase in R/sub L/, fall in V/sub max/ at 50% VC. (Variation in individual sensitivity.) First test indicates an inhibition of maximal inspiratory effort possibly due to receptors in large bronchi. Second and third show increase in resistance in both large and small airways. Greater and more variable changes with exercise. Standards should take this into consideration. Dynamic compliance might be a sensitive indicator of changes occurring at the terminal bronchioles.
