Abstract

This paper presents a heuristic procedure and the computer software for solving the short term or dynamic production line balancing problem. The procedure is intended for use on periodic basis to determine how many operators should be assigned to each work station on a production line. The objective is to control work in process inventories and minimize idle labor while producing the required amount of final product. The production line is assumed to be balanced in its static state and work elements will not be re-allocated. The computer software is in BASIC, requires very little main core storage and can be readily adapted to run on micro and mini computers.
