Abstract

It was demonstrated that a writing process starts to approach an adiabatic condition when the duration of laser irradiation is reduced to about 10ns. The resultant steep temperature profile and reduction in the level of energy necessary for writing were found to be advantageous for writing small marks and for suppressing thermal interference effect.
