Abstract

A cross was made between a soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] type having very short internodes and a highly productive breeding line with multiple disease resistance. The donor of the short internode character ‘PI 227224,’ was very low yielding, primarily because of its susceptibility to most diseases common to soybeans in the area. Plants with short internodes could be easily identified in the segregating populations. All F2 plants expressing the character bred true, whereas about half of the F2 population segregated for internode length in the F3 generation. Heterozygous F2 plants could not be distinguished from plants homozygous for normal internode length. These data indicated that the short internode character is probably determined by a single recessive gene.
