Abstract

This work aims to investigate how volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted from vehicular exhausts behave in regard to their role in pollutant photochemical reactions at very short distances from their source. Results obtained with a receptor model of ambient VOC data measured at two sampling sites in the city of Rome, placed at different distances from the traffic line, have been compared with VOC fingerprints obtained in tunnel tests at different times after emission. The results show that the change in fingerprint with distance is similar to the modification occurring by ageing in the atmosphere.
