Abstract

Light sources with low coherence and high coupling efficiency are needed for certain types of fiber-optic interferometric sensors. By driving a 1.3-μm diode laser with picosecond electrical pulses, we have reduced its coherence length to 44 μm. Coupling with an efficiency of 38% into a single-mode fiber has been measured.
