Abstract
Aims: Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) is a condition of unknown aetiology that causes chronic gut dysfunction and comprises two pathologically different forms, Crohn's Disease (CD) and Ulcerative Colitis (UC). Both conditions are characterised by a marked disturbance in the equilibrium between absorptive and secretory electrolyte transport in inflamed colonic mucosa but the underlying mechanisms are not known.
