Abstract

Short bursts of scintillation of satellite radio signals have been observed on records received at Aberystwyth from the satellite S-66 (BE-B). Bursts of scintillation have a duration of about one minute on the records. The diurnal variation of occurrence of bursts of scintillation is similar to that of ordinary scintillation, occurring predominantly at night. The occurrences of bursts of scintillation are clustered around the position where the ray from the satellite to the receiver is parallel to the Earth's magnetic field but there is considerable scattering as well. The occurrences of bursts of scintillation have significant correlation with the occurrences of spread- F but not with sporadic- E, meteor showers or magnetic activity.
