Abstract

The paper describes the procedure and reasons for the installation of a geotextile reinforced embankment in the coastal waters of Helsinki, Finland. The structure that was completed over several winters produced a new river shore line thus enabling land reclamation and also provided a stability berm to the surrounding shore area. A unique feature of the construction procedure was the use of the winter ice cover to facilitate the fabrication and positioning of the geotextile reinforcement and the placement of the lower part of the embankment.
