Abstract
Six swabbing materials easily and cheaply available in India, viz., cotton cloth, Johnson's bud, cellophane tape, paraffin, wax, Whatman filter paper No. 1 and sanitary tissue paper have been analysed for Pb, Sb, Ba, Cu and Hg using neutron activation analysis (NAA) (for Sb, Ba, Cu, Hg) and anodic stripping voltammetry (ASV) for (Pb). Sb and Hg levels have been found to be low in all the materials. Ba levels are low in Whatman filter paper No. 1 and paraffin wax. Pb values are low in Whatman filter paper No. 1, cotton cloth and sanitary tissue paper. Cu values are minimum in the paraffin wax as compared to the other materials. Based on this study and the previous studies on hand blanks, Whatman filter paper No. 1 appears to be the most suitable swabbing material under field conditions in India.
