Abstract

Shock and death are rare in most uncomplicated viral illnesses. However, shock associated with dengue virus infection is a major cause of death among Southeast Asian children. Hypoproteinemia, a common finding in this series, appears to play an important role both in the genesis of the shock and in the patients' response to therapy. The pathophysiology of this severe mosquito-borne hemorrhagic fever is discussed and an approach to therapy is outlined.
