Abstract
This quotation from Thane Rosenbaum's first novel, Second Hand Smoke, is one of the bleakest and most compelling literary depictions of the impact of the Shoah on children of survivors. Thane Rosenbaum, who was born in New York in 1960, is the only surviving child of Holocaust survivors. In his book Rosenbaum elucidates how the so-called second hand experiences of the Holocaust may constitute a lasting legacy handed down from one generation to the next, a legacy which can almost destroy the recipient's own life.
