Abstract

Shirley Hughes has been illustrating and writing books for young children for nearly 40 years. In that time she has gradually developed new levels of communication within fictional texts for early and pre‐readers, and has set new standards for innovative and well‐crafted picture books. Shirley Hughes has been described as a passionate communicator and has often been called upon to represent her profession, especially in times when libraries and schoolbook funds in the UK have been under particular attack. She continues to encourage young illustrators and has brought a number of new artists to the attention of publishers. Hughes has worked as a judge for the Mother Goose Award for most talented newcomer to children's illustration. Her work is known around the world. This study will deal only with the books that Shirley Hughes has written, as well as illustrated ‐ these already number over 200. It will not cover the many further titles to which she has added her distinctive and sensitive artistic touch.
