Abstract

The philosophy and merits of the two major forms of company management and organizational structure are examined, with particular application to the shipbuilding industry. The highly successful operation of one of Japan s major shipbuilders, a product form of organization, is discussed along with a management strategy that emphasizes hands-on shop experience for all college-educated middle managers. Appendices list examples of typical responsibilities for staff personnel at the yard. Only America can surpass Japan in shipbuilding. But, we do not worry because America has a human problem: not enough college-educated people in middle management. Hisashi Shinto3
