Abstract

The Clyde is famous throughout the world for its shipbuilding. It has been called the cradle of steam navigation and is the birthplace of the Queen Mary and countless other liners, warships and cargo ships. Glasgow was not always a city of industry: its early life was dominated by the cathedral and the university. However, by the eighteenth century the import of tobacco and sugar and the manufacture of textiles and pottery began the transformation of the city into a centre of commerce and industry.
