Abstract

Shigella infection has been rarely reported as a complication in patients with hemoglobinopathy. A case of S sonnei bacteremia and diarrhea in a 20-month-old infant with SS hemoglobin was recently observed. The patient was treated with ampicillin sodium and kanamycin sulfate and recovered. Greater use of media designed for efficient isolation of Shigella may lead to more frequent identification of this organism in patients with hemoglobinopathies.
