Abstract

Vibration characteristics of elastic beams are modified by a change in stiffness due to a discontinuity. This effect was first investigated by W. T. Thompson [J. Appl. Mech., Trans. ASME 16, 203–207 (1949)]. In this paper there is a report on a study of the frequency shifts due to variations in individual parameters of a crack in a beam. A quantity termed the signature sum is defined in terms of deviation from the modal frequencies of an uncracked beam and is proposed as an index to identify the presence of a discontinuity in a beam under investigation.
