Abstract

The effect of high pressure (up to 10 GPa) on the emission spectrum of α-Al 2O 3:Mn 4+ was studied. It is shown that R1[ 2E( E ̄ ) → 4A 2 ]and R2[ 2E(2 A ̄ ) → 4A 2 ]spectral lines tend to shift linearly to red. The sensitivity of R1 and R2 upon pressure in α-Al 2O 3:Mn 4+ is greater than in ruby. The position of the R1 and R2 lines was calculated assuming that these effects are due to a decrease in the interionic distance at the high pressure. Results of calculation agree well with all experimental data over a considered pressure range (disagreement less than 0.07%).
