Abstract

Ion channeling and Rutherford backscattering (RBS) in small, high-quality single crystals of (Y,Er)Ba{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 7{minus}{delta}} has previously shown an abrupt anomaly at {ital T}{sub {ital c}}in displacements perpendicular to the {ital c} axis of atoms in the (001) Cu-O rows. Here we report additional RBS-channeling results, and new characteristic x-ray measurements that permit more direct identification of the displacements of the individual atomic species in both materials. It is demonstrated that the observed phonon anomaly shifts directly with stoichiometry-induced changes in {ital T}{sub {ital c}}.
