Abstract

Shielding requirements for dentist's offices in which diagnostic x-ray procedures are used are outlined with reference to the National Bureau of Standards Handbook 70. Tables are provided showing protective radiation barriers necessary for more realistic workloads than those provided by the Handbook. The data include necessary barrier thickness for various building materials (and their lead equivalents) for workloads of 500 ma-sec/week at 70 and 100 kvp. When lead shielding in the walls is necessary it is available in the following forms: lead glass, lead insulated concrete partition blocks, lead insulated gypsum partition blocks, lead-clad plywood, lead-backed rocklath, and lead-backed sheet rock. A list of the names of the suppliers of these materials is provided. However, many walls, constructed of conventional building materials, offer more than adequate shielding of persons from undue exposure to x radintion. (H.H.D.)
