Abstract

A method for calculating alpha -transfer form factors and alpha - widths with shell-model wave functions is presented and applied to the alpha pick-up and the alpha -stripping on /sup 16/O leading to the so-called groundstate rotational bands of /sup 12/C and /sup 20/Ne, respectively. In the cas e of /sup 20/Ne the DWBA analyses of /sup 6/Li,d) reactions and the observed alpha widths seem to indicate that the shell model with (sd)/sup 4/ configuration does not sufficiently describe the alpha -clusterization of this nucleus, and it is necessary to introduce an additional alpha -like correlation due to the mixing of higher configurations.
