Abstract

Using a modified Nilsson model and Strutinsky's shell correction method, we investigate the change of shell structure by spheroidal deformations for sodium clusters with up to N = 850 atoms. We have found good agreement between our theoretically predicted deformed magic numbers and the experimentally observed ones extracted from recent sodium mass spectra of the Copenhagen group. Following the ideas of Balian and Bloch and Strutinsky et al., we discuss the relevance of classical periodic orbits in a spheroidal cavity to the gross-shell structure of deformed sodium clusters.
