Abstract

An effective interaction for use in the calcium isotopes is derived from the Tabakin interaction. The matrix elements of the effective interaction compare extremely well with those of the Hamada-Johnston force calculated by Kuo and Brown. Comparisons are also made with the Federman-Talmi parameters and the Engeland-Osnes parameters. Shell-model calculations of 42Ca and 43Ca are performed. We find that the effective interaction which reproduces the 42Ca spectra quite well gives a ground state which is too low in 43Ca.
