Abstract

It was with a heavy heart that psychiatrist Shekhar Saxena left his patients in Delhi, India, to join WHO in Geneva, Switzerland, in 1998. “I really miss some of my patients, and the interaction with them and their families”, says the director of WHO's Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse. “But my clinical experience has been immensely useful in my current work. It is my patients' faces I have in mind when advocating for more resources and more services to a minister of health.”
