Abstract

Brief history of the idealized truss models for shear design is traced. Modified Compression Field Theory (MCFT) using strut and tie beam is applied to High strength concrete (HSC). Beams. A computer program based on multi-layered elements located across the beam depth and a refined stress-strain curve for HSC are used. Theoretical results obtained are examined in the light of experimental results of beams. Provisions of ACI Code 318 are examined for HSC shear design. Owing to recent development of more accurate fracture mechanics methods, an alternate Fracturing Truss model (FTM) is recommended for inclusion in future design codes.
