Abstract
This article is concerned with the distinctive nature and ethos of the three religious sisterhoods, the Sisters of St Dominic, the Sisters of Mercy and the Sisters of St Joseph, whom James Murray brought to the Diocese of Maitland between 1867 and 1883. It examines matters of class and status in relation to these sisterhoods, the recruits they drew to their ranks and the choices which women made both with regard to joining a particular religious congregation and to their place within it.
